How a document is draftedMatter facts and a template go in, a draft comes out, and the practitioner checks facts, citations, tone, and scope before it is used.

Context

Tax Relief Counsel is a solo tax-law practice. Its matters produce long documents built from similar inputs, and before this project each one was drafted from scratch, with the same sections rebuilt every time.

I went through the drafting process with the practitioner, mapped where the time went, and built a template library that a language model drafts from using structured inputs.

My role

I led workflow mapping, template design, prompt design, quality assurance, and implementation with the practitioner.

The work

Client materials are confidential. The figures below show the process, not any matter documents.

Before~3 hours per matter
After~30 minutes per matter
Drafting time per matterFrom approximately three hours to about 30 minutes.
  1. 1Structured intakeThe recurring questions asked once, in one place
  2. 2Matter factsVerified inputs separated from boilerplate
  3. 3Template selectionThe document skeleton for this matter type
  4. 4LLM-supported draftSections filled against the template, not free-written
  5. 5Practitioner reviewFacts, citations, tone, and scope checked before anything leaves
Intake to draftThe five stages, from the intake questions to the practitioner’s review of the draft.
01Matter type
  • Shared structure and tone
  • Required sections in order
02Sections
  • Standard language where it holds
  • Marked slots for matter facts
03Checkpoints
  • Facts verified against intake
  • Citations and figures checked
  • Final read for tone and scope
The template libraryOne structure per matter type: the sections in order, standard language with slots for the facts, and the checks run before a document goes out.

Approach

The templates came before any automation. The recurring sections, inputs, and decisions had to be written down in a standard form first; the drafting model only produced consistent output once it had that structure to fill in.

What changed

Document-generation time fell from approximately three hours to about 30 minutes per matter.

The process is documented so the practitioner runs it without me, with the review steps written into it.
